Architecture. Theories and project

Research Areas

PhD Course in Architecture - Design and Theories has always been focussed on Urban and Architectural Design -- an area of concentration that is taught during the entire Curriculum of professional studies in Architecture. Our PhD course has different area of focus that share common educational objectives:
a) the refinement of logical and theoretical elaboration capabilities, together with creative and practical architectural skills responding to current pedagogical requirements, the public administration’s need for quality design, and the conditions of architectural production.
b)The construction of a methodology for the acquisition of an adequate strategy in architectural design. This aspect entails the comprehension of the complexity of projects in terms of economic, environmental and legislative constraints; and the exploration of the symbolic, aesthetic, and formal aspects that transform the design into a form of communication.
c)The in-depth study of design issues involving the influence of technology on architecture; and issues connected to the preservation of the built, natural, urban and historical environments, and landscapes.
To achieve these objectives, all Programs share a common educational philosophy and set of activities. The formative objectives of each Program are the following:
 1. Urban Design Experimentation Program. This program will provide researchers with the skills required by academic and research centers, and administrative agencies responsible for territorial management, and the planning and design of housing and infrastructure involved in the elaboration of vast and complex projects. (Design Lab. Large Scale and Overall issues Lab.)
2. History, Theory and Criticism of Early Modern to Contemporary Urbanism Program. The aim of the Program is to educate scholars of urbanism with the skills and abilities required in academic and research centers, and administrative agencies involved in the study of urban structure and development. (QART - Contemporary Rome Lab. Observatory on Early Modern and Modern Rome.)
3. History, Theory and Criticism of Contemporary Architecture Program. The aim of the Program is to educate scholars with the abilities required in academic and research centers, administrative agencies involved in the study and interpretation of contemporary trends in architecture and urban design.(History, Theory and Criticism of Contemporary Architecture )
 4. Study and Experimentation of Sustainable Architecture Program. The focus of the program is the study of possible equilibriums between architectural and development needs and environmental protection, especially focusing on the housing sector. The program will form scholars with the abilities required in academic and research centers, administrative agencies involved in the study of sustainable urban development and of the built environment. (Architecture and Environmental Control Lab. Housing Lab.)
5. Architecture as Communication Program. This program focuses on architectural experimentation through the use of information technologies. The aim is to form scholars with the abilities required in academic and research centers, and administrative agencies involved in experimental explorations of urban space; and of the use of architectural elements as tools of communication and information of high formal quality, enriched by the new interactive and multimedia possibilities. (LaMA - Multimedia Architecture Lab)
 6. Architecture and Urban Planning in Non-European Countries Program. The aim of the program is to educate scholars with the abilities required in Italian and foreign academic and research centers, and administrative agencies responsible for territorial management, and the planning and design of housing and infrastructure in the context of non-European cultures, especially focusing on Asian countries. (LAPEX - Architecture in Non-European Countries Program.)
 7. Interior and Exhibition Design Program. The Program focuses on a multidisciplinary approach: art, architecture and multimedia perspectives are integrated to experiment approaches to the design of exhibition spaces, events, art shows and theater production. The fundamental assumption is that contemporary cities are ’cities in the making,’ in a state of flux and whose spaces are used as forms of display and performance. That theme is the filter through which we will view trends and formal languages of contemporary architecture. The aim of the Program is to educate scholars interested in the elaboration of methods attuned to a growing tendency to set up exhibition spaces in public buildings and spaces. (Interior Design and Exhibition Space Lab.) The Seven above described research areas are addressed in the different Laboratories in which is subdivided the Department. Accordingly with personal objectives, each PhD candidate will be addressed to one of different laboratories to develop the individual research and to collaborate, at the same time, to the on going researches.
